What BMR estimates

Basal metabolic rate (BMR) is measured under strict resting conditions. This commonly named BMR calculator uses Mifflin–St Jeor to predict resting energy expenditure (REE), which is related but is not a direct measurement of BMR. Real measured resting energy can differ from an equation because of body composition, health, temperature, medications and other factors.

Formula used

This tool uses the simplified Mifflin–St Jeor equation developed in healthy adults.

Male equation: 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age + 5

Female equation: 10 × weight (kg) + 6.25 × height (cm) − 5 × age − 161

Important limitations

This is a prediction equation, not indirect calorimetry. It may be less appropriate in pregnancy, severe illness, unusual body composition or populations unlike the study sample.
